The New Suicide Bomber

October 06, 2006

A few weeks ago it was revealed that U.S. policy makers had nixed a rocket attack against a group of nearly 200 Taliban guerillas assembled at a funeral of their fallen brethren, killed earlier that day in a firefight with Coalition Forces in Afghanistan.

The group, composed of enemy combatants, could easily have been obliterated with a single rocket. A military spokesman reportedly justified the inaction, saying “We hold ourselves to a higher standard than our opponents.”

Meanwhile, the other side marches to the standards of a different drummer. CNN.com reports from Baghdad that the newest wrinkle in suicide bombing is to abduct an individual, hide explosives in the victim’s car, and then release him. He is then ordered to drive along a specific road. Insurgents follow at a distance in another car and at a moment of their choosing, detonate the unsuspecting driver’s by means of a cell phone.
